Hi, I'm Josette

My name is Josette Lynch, I am a 27 year old artist based in Cowra NSW. I grew up on the land, I feel like I know it inside out and I don’t think I could leave it. My favourite times growing up was racing home after school, running up from the bus track, dropping my bags down to go and hop on the horse and ride around the paddock chasing stock with my dog Fudge. I was lucky. Our property was on a hill, you could see the hills and rolling land of the Central West and how each day it changed. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, the clear mark to the start and end of the day.

Pieces that can be looked at with the thought of 'this is home, my home.'

No matter where I travelled, I always felt drawn back to the Central West. Over time, I realised this was more than familiarity — it was home. The hills, fence lines, patchwork crops, gum trees and vast skies felt intrinsic to who I am. Accepting this shifted my practice. My focus turned toward the land.

Meet the Artist

My work is inspired by the changing moods of the landscape — the depth of sky, the subtle shifts of season, and the quiet power held within open space. I often describe my work as “stories from the land, for the land.” I am fascinated by the way light transforms everything within minutes — how grey can turn to deep red, pink, and orange as the sun lowers behind layered clouds.

Travelled the world - but the Central West is always my home

During my early twenties, I travelled all around the world. Working in different countries, teaching in remote communities and exploring their land and learning different ways of life. In between studying teaching at uni in Newcastle and travelling I started painting. all of the pieces were abstract and if I am being honest there was not a lot going on. I look back now and that was the start, it was almost like the learning phase where I was trying new techniques, building my paint and brush collection and I guess using it as an outlet. It was a huge time of growth. From the beginning I have said “If I could just paint, I would be so happy.” At the time it was still foreign but I did blend my artistic pieces with writing that would always land for people in a different profound way. It was all a part of me, a part of me in a different form. I heard that line in PS I Love You after I watched it maybe in my second year of uni. ‘A part of me in a different form’ - that is what I hold with me, that to me is creating. That is what I share.

It’s funny, no matter where I went or who I met nowhere would compare to the land of the Central West. I came to realise that this was ‘home’. It was in my blood. The hills, the skies and the rolling fence lines. The patchwork of crops and the gum tree lined river. That was a part of me. When I discovered this, or maybe accepted this, that is when it all started to shift. A shift to the land.
